Allergic Rhinitis
If you are allergic to pollens and inhale them through your nose, you may experience hayfever symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and an itchy throat. This is called ‘allergic rhinitis’ and it can also make you feel tired, give you headaches and impair your sense of smell.
These symptoms are typically more severe in the morning and evening because pollen levels rise throughout the day and then settle at night. They can also be more severe on windy days as pollen becomes scattered, but are less serious on rainy days as the pollen clears.

Rashes
Skin allergies have symptoms like eczema (dry, red and itchy skin) and hives (white itchy bumps that look like insect bites).
Whilst hives (also known as urticaria) often appear as a reaction to mosquito bites, other causes can be hard to identify.

Watery eyes
Itchy, watery eyes occur when tear ducts become blocked or pollen grains caught in the eye cause local inflammation. Irritation of the nose can also affect the eyes, and some hayfever sufferers are sensitive to bright light.

Runny nose
Noses are particularly susceptible to hayfever. Thin, clear and watery discharges are common but if they become thicker and coloured, the cause could be a secondary infection.
Your nose may become blocked too, due to increased blood flow responding to inflammation, and this can lead to headaches and earache. Nasal itching is also common, and can sometimes be felt in the roof of the mouth.

Sinusitis
It’s thought that the mucous membranes in your nose can swell as a result of hayfever, blocking the drainage of the sinuses. This can result in sinusitis.

Ear conditions
Ear ache can be a complication of hayfever; caused by infection in the
middle ear. This is another condition that merits a trip to the doctor.

Headaches
Some hayfever sufferers get headaches, which are thought to be caused by the increased pressure of a blocked nose. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about the best way to treat this.

Children’s symptoms
In general, children’s symptoms are much the same as those experienced by adults. The emotional symptoms can be the same too.
Additionally, hayfever can lead to dark circles under the eyes; and children often use the palm of their hand to push their nose up to relieve itching. Some doctors call this action the 'allergic salute'.
